Name Tracing Letters: Dotted, Dashed or Gray

Dotted letters put a dot trail on the shape of each letter, so the child joins the dots. Dashed outline draws the edge of the letter and leaves the inside empty, which suits a child who has outgrown dots. Gray letters are a solid light shape to go over with one smooth stroke.

The first row of every name is always solid black, so there is something to copy. For name tracing, start with the Preschool line size, then step down to Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade as the letters get smaller. Turn guide lines on if letters float or change height. Capitalization starts with a capital first letter and can be switched to all capitals, all lowercase or as typed.

What the PDF Contains and Where It Stops

The worksheet is built in your browser and the names are never uploaded. The PDF pages are 200 dpi images, so the letters are sharp on paper but are not text you can edit or select. A test of 30 names in Cursive, one per page, made a 30-page file in about 6 seconds.

The tool sets Latin letters, with accents. In the D'Nealian-style and Cursive fonts an accented letter is drawn in the Print font. Another alphabet is drawn in a system font and is not meant for tracing. D'Nealian-style is a similar open-source slanted hand, not the trademarked typeface. Dot positions follow the letter skeleton, so dots may sit slightly closer or farther apart where strokes cross.

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit on how many sheets you make. It does not use the free AI allowance of this site.

No. The sheet is built inside your browser, so the names you type are not sent to a server and are not saved.

Start with Preschool (24 mm) for a child who is just beginning, or Kindergarten (19 mm) for a steadier hand. 1st Grade (14 mm) and 2nd Grade (10 mm) are smaller. The size is the height from top line to baseline. If a child gets frustrated, go one size up.

Yes, name tracing sheets for a class fit in one PDF. Put one name per line, up to 60 names, and every name gets its own tracing rows in the same PDF. Keep one name per page switched on to hand each child their own sheet.

Yes. Each line takes up to 40 characters of Latin letters, so a short word or a spelling word is set the same way as a name.

Capitalization starts as a capital first letter followed by lowercase, the way a name is written. Choose all capitals, all lowercase or as typed if the child is learning a different form.

Yes. Choose Cursive for American-style joined letters, or D'Nealian style for a slanted hand. Print is the plain school-style letterform.

Accented Latin letters work, though in the two script styles they are drawn in the Print font. A long name is made smaller automatically so it fits on one row. Names over 40 characters are cut, and only the first 60 names are used.

Press Download PDF, open the file, and print the name tracing sheet. Choose A4 or Letter first so the page matches your paper. Print at 100 percent, not fit to page, to keep the line sizes as set.

A name is a word the child cares about and uses to label drawings and cards. Tracing it builds pencil control and letter shapes. If the hand is not ready for a pencil yet, play with clay or big drawing first and come back later.
